What Do You Love Most About Your Work?

Writer's picture: Matthew CossensMatthew Cossens

Last week while on holiday I came across this post from David Wolstenholme.

“I was thinking yesterday about what it is I like most about my work.

It's a difficult one, but if I had to pin it down to one.

I reckon it's how privileged I feel when a recruiter shares their personal story with me.

What do you love most about your job?

Is it...?

The money

The company and the team you work with

The feeling you get from each placement

Selling opportunities and influencing people

Changing someone's life ( it doesn't happen every day)

Learning about others

Attracting hard to find candidates

Pitching for business

Negotiating packages

Leading others to success

Variety of your day

Receiving referrals

Honing your sales skills

Leaving at 6pm

Or something completely different?”

I missed the chance to comment on David's post at the time as I was relaxing on holiday but thought I would share my quick thoughts.

Ooh, What a great question. One that I will briefly respond to here.

For me if I had to bring it back to the one thing I love most about my job then the answer would be “Success”. I get the privilege/opportunity to be involved in another individual’s success!

For me this means:

If you are a candidate – I am trusted with the opportunity to help you make that next step in your ‘Success’. Whether that is the next step in your journey, your first leadership opportunity, your move into contracting or your dream Executive role. To this day this is one of the most exciting parts about being involved in recruitment.

In addition on the client side - I have the opportunity to work with you to accelerate your business/vision/goals/culture/program of work. It’s about delivering an outcome that drives your ‘Success’. (again in whatever form that takes) It’s about building something bigger with you and shaping the culture, team and environment. This is what I love about the clients I work with. It’s about the journey, experience and the destination.

For me it’s all about our customers (candidates/clients alike) and taking a longterm view – in my opinion that is what separates the best in our industry. They care about their customers, their experience, their results and this builds trust and relationships.

I’d take this view of ‘Success’ another step. I love that by instilling the above (and more) in my team and creating the right lens for them to see/deliver recruitment through that I also get the privilege/opportunity to help them become more successful which in turn creates a beautiful cycle for this to be replicated.

To be a consistent, high performer in our industry I believe you really need to love what you do and have a compelling ‘why’ that drives you. I love helping other people become successful and take the next step towards the best version of themselves. The above is a short view into my view of the world 😊

A recruitment career is amazing if you can come into it with the right attitude and think about the legacy you create. My love for recruitment is a love of making other people successful.

I love this quote from Maya Angelou.

“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off of you.” -- Maya Angelou

Thanks David for the thought provoking question that has challenged me to sit down and draft a quick response over the weekend.

If you aren’t already connected to David then I suggest you do. He has some great content, thought provoking questions, knows his stuff when it comes to personal branding and is a good human being.
