It’s the start of a new year again, and the start of a new decade. It’s that time where countless people claim a New Year Resolution and declare that they are going to change. This seems to have multiplied with the new decade 😊
I’m not a believer in New Year’s Resolutions, I think for the majority of people they don’t work and data support this. (according to the US and World Report – this could be as high as 80%)
I believe you can change your habits, routines, schedules and goals at any time so why wait for the new year. Life is all about choice, and you are in control of the choices you make and ultimately the path you take your life down. And I am big on goal setting as you would have seen in my previous blog! – https://www.matthewcossens.com/post/how-i-set-goals
At this time of the year though there are many people who are looking to change their physical appearance, diet, start a new job, begin exercising, start a new habit, stop a bad habit etc.
This brings me to the first quote for the year:
“There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results” – Kenneth Blanchard
My question to anyone looking to make a change (myself included) is ‘Are you Committed?’ If you are just interested, (and not committed) you are probably wasting your time! Like other resolutions or changes you have planned in the past they are likely to fizzle out when you hit an obstacle either externally or internally or feel a little pain.
I would take Kenneth’s quote one step further.
I believe there are reasons and results. Results don’t lie. There are excuses and excellence. Excellence doesn’t have a way out. It has commitment. Excuses are for people that try. They are not for the committed.
Results and excellence doesn’t mean you always win. There will be variables outside of your control. People, environments etc. You can’t control the outcome, but you can control the meaning of the outcome. If you are committed you will grow. You will grind harder, you will find a way. You are committed to the result, not chasing the excuse or the way out. Growth comes when you are uncomfortable, growth comes in the pain, growth comes in stretching your boundaries. Growth comes in achieving the result.
So what are you going to do in 2020, in this new decade? Whatever you decide can I
challenge you to chase commitment, results and excellence!
