“I can’t relate to lazy people. We don’t speak the same language. I don’t understand you. I don’t want to understand you.” – Kobe Bryant
That is a powerful quote!
I have never been a Lakers fan, nor a huge fan of Kobe Bryant in my youth (as a Bulls fan) – but his mentality, that is next level!!
For those who don’t know Kobe Bryant’s achievements include five NBA championships, two NBA finals MVP awards, and two Olympic gold medals. In addition to this he is the third leading scorer of all time in the regular season (behind only Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar)
Kobe recently retired from the game and has written a book – The Mamba Mentality, that takes you inside the mind of high performance and gives you an insight into one of the ways to achieve at the highest level. (this is well worth reading and likely will be a topic of a future blog post)
So what is the Mamba Mentality? – It’s simply the constant quest of becoming the best version of yourself. A constant quest to be better than you were yesterday. For those who are interested I would check out the book or his videos on YouTube. I love his thoughts on mindset and the keys to success.
So can you relate to lazy people? Do you speak their language? I know personally relating to people who are not hungry, driven, passionate or who are lazy is a real struggle for me. I don’t understand it at all. I appreciate not everyone is wired the same but why wouldn’t you want to wake up everyday and chase the best version of you? Why not chase mastery? Why not set higher goals?
Unlike Kobe though, I have probably tried to understand it over the years. (as a leader) I’ve tried to work with lazy team members, to try and find different buttons to unlock the mystery and to drive them to greater levels of success. I have failed miserably with lazy people, not just once but time and time again!
If you want motivated people you need to hire them, you can’t change people who aren’t motivated or who are lazy. Only they can change themselves.
At the end of the day if you don’t speak their language isn’t it all just lost in translation?
