Starting on Sunday the 26th of March 2023 Steve Scanlan will be walking from Sydney to Brisbane to raise money to support fara, a charity supporting research into Friedreich Ataxia.
Over the 26-day journey, Steve will average more than 40km per day...900kms in total.
Friedreich Ataxia is an inherited genetic condition that causes progressive damage to the nervous system resulting in symptoms which include muscle weakness, loss of balance and coordination (ataxia), speech problems and heart disease. Friedreich Ataxia is the most common form of hereditary ataxia, affecting about 1 in 30,000 people in Australia. There is currently no treatment for Friedreich Ataxia and no cure. For more information go to: https://fara.org.au/.
Friedreich Ataxia is a rare genetic condition that has affected my friend and work colleague Steve Scanlan's children (13 and 11) with no known cure, has seen his eldest son unable to walk more than a few steps and his daughter is wheelchair bound.
His walk will finish and coincide with the All For The Kids II Charity boxing event. An event that I will be officially taking part in on April 21st (<5 weeks time). I'm currently in fight camp, training 2.5 hours per day to be ready for the event.
It's been many years since I have competed in MMA and this will be my first (and last!) boxing fight.
We both have tough journeys ahead but nothing when compared to the daily challenges people with FA face.
Our goal is to raise over $500,000 between us through corporate sponsors, the two key events, (the walk and fight night) our team at Technology People donating from each placement made from March 26th to April 21st and the amazing people in our extended networks.
More information on sponsorship and the event can be found below:
You can also donate directly to fara via this website:
All donations over $2 are tax deductible. If you are in a position to support this cause personally or as a corporate sponsor it would be greatly appreciated.
For any questions about the event, or other ways to get involved don't hesitate to contact me.
Thanks, Matt
