On Friday, 23rd March, I had the privilege of attending the Growth Faculty and their Peak Performance Summit in Melbourne for 2018! What a remarkable line up of speakers with John Maxwell, Liz Wiseman and Michael Bungay-Stanier that left all attendees challenged, wanting more and expecting more as leaders and for their respective teams. If you haven’t heard of these speakers before then I highly recommend you read their books and listen to their content. They are remarkable in their field of knowledge and exceptional speakers.
It was special to meet with them all, but in particular John Maxwell. (as I have been reading his books and impacted by his teaching for over 15 years) I had the opportunity to have my book signed but to also share lunch with him, Liz and Michael and have an additional Q&A session. What a day!
One of the things I loved about John Maxwell was his continued pursuit of growth (as an expert in his field). John was very clear that if you were satisfied with where you were 5 years ago (or are) then you are simply not growing! And that he is constantly looking for new ways to learn. He believes he can learn from everyone, it’s just a matter of finding out what it is to learn from them. At the Q&A he shared a personal story of when he was a pastor on how he invested his money and time to learn and seek the advice of the best. You have to ‘pay the price to learn’ and understand their ‘is no success without sacrifice’.
He called us to be constantly challenging ourselves – what are you doing to develop yourself as a leader? Specifically and intentionally? How are you developing leaders around you? He spoke specifically on the 5 levels of leadership but also on the ‘law of the lid’ (for those unaware of this I suggest reading the 21 irrefutable laws of leadership) and the need for us as leaders to raise the lid, to raise our businesses. He called us to be tour guide leaders and take our people where we have gone before, not just simple travel agents who have not walked the path.
John evidenced growth in his own life and discussed growth and his new book “Developing the leader within you 2.0” which is an update on the original he wrote 20+years ago. The book was updated a staggering 89% with lessons and updates from his own journey in leadership. (And what a journey it has been!)
Thank you John for sharing your wisdom and leadership journey with the world. What a joy it was to spend the day with you, Liz and Michael learning and growing. I have already been applying the ACT method shared on the day (Apply, Change, Teach) to the content that resonated with me and I am excited to lift the lid on my leadership and our business in 2018!
